October, 2016 Newsletter

From the Desk of the Worthy Grand Matron:

September was a busy month in many ways. This was the month when we recalled the tragedy of 911. Louisiana experienced its own tragedy when so many people had their homes flooded and many lost everything. However, our members have stepped up and given assistance when possible. Many of you donated items as well as financial aid, helped remove ruined items from homes, tore out walls and even used your own boats to rescue individuals . Thank you to all who did whatever they could. For some of you it was only a prayer said, but that is something all can do and we all know God hears those.

The MS/LA Exchange in Natchez, MS was a great success. I was told LA had over 100 members present. A great time was had by all and many friendships were renewed. The Patriotic Theme was one which I am sure touched the hearts of all present. Doris Moreton, Grand Chaplain and a former service member, gave a moving tribute to the POW/MIAs. The reading regarding the many trials our flag has endured followed. Then Jim Luttrell, Grand Warder, MS, thrilled us with his wonderful songs.

The weekend of Sept. 16-17, brought together Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas in forming a new, smaller friendship exchange. Friday members were treated to fried catfish with trimmings by Shanes at the El Karubah Shrine Temple on the Lake. The Saturday luncheon was one of just visiting. This allowed members of the four states to get to know each other better. Saturday night at the banquet, we were blessed with the wonderful talent of Katie Ashcroft and her father, Harold Ashcroft. I extend to each member of the committee who planned, prepared and executed this event a sincere thanks for all your hard work. Texas won the attendance award. Louisiana members thank you for your support in attending. Even though we were not eligible for the award, we paralleled Texas in number.

Reminder: Article One, Elections, Section 1 (a) p. 45 The Annual Election of Officers shall take place at the first stated meeting in December. Nominations for office are permitted. In the event of only one nominee for a particular office, it is permissible to elect that person by acclamation. It shall be illegal to nominate and elect all officers under one motion and second. Each officer must be individually elected. Please check the remainder of the guide lines regarding elections. These are all on p. 45 of the Constitution, By-Laws or General Regulations of the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of the State of Louisiana.

Thought: We all have our time machines. Some take us back, they're called memories. Some take us forward, they're called dreams. -Jeremy Irons, actor (b. 19 Sep 1948)

Thank you Sister Rovenia for allowing us to thank all of our sisters and brothers who were so gracious with calls and cards of interest in Buck's well being during his recent time in the hospital and recovery.  He is getting stronger each day.  Your cards were so encouraging but your prayers were the most important.  God heard and answered.  Our love and thanks.
